Let’s Talk About Money: How to Set an Interior Project Budget

There’s nothing worse than dreaming up a plan and realizing it’s not doable with your current financials. I would much rather know a realistic cost so I can set my expectations upfront. I speak from experience because I’m working off of my 2-years-out-of-college income, meaning 90% of the things I want to do to my home are not in the cards right now (not an exaggeration).

Here are 3 tips to help you set a realistic budget:

  1. Research. A pillow from Target can cost $20-30. Understanding the cost of individual items can help give you a realistic perspective.

  2. If you’re wanting to revamp accents vs. furniture vs. permanent fixtures, you’re looking at very different expense ranges. You could update accents (soft goods, decor, wall hangings) in your entire [small] home for close to $1,000+. If you’ll need new furniture or permanent fixtures and that number increases significantly. Remember: thrifting, DIYing, and re-using what you already own are great ways to keep that number down!

  3. If you’re working from a strict budget, prioritize 1) the rooms you spend the most time in and 2) the furniture in this room. Moving on to softer accents and decor when you have an additional budget will be the next step. Starting with accents when the foundation doesn’t bring you joy will end up costing you more in the long term. Furniture drastically changes a space and will have the most immediate pay-off - in the form of your own happiness!
